International Podcast Day

Podcasts are to this century what probably radio was to the last century. A marriage of two words, iPod and broadcasting lead to the name ‘Podcast’. The iPod had its demise with only iPod Touch still being available, but the term podcast is here to stay. Podcasts remarkably changed the way people consume audio content, and for that reason, Sept 30th is celebrated as International Podcast Day!

Listed below are a selection of some of our favourite podcasts. We hope you find some among them of interest to you.

01. The Futur : Design

A podcast about the Business of Design and Creative Entrepreneurship hosted by Emmy-winning director, Chris Do. Positioned as the Futur of design education, this podcast has over 60 episodes out already!

Blind Founder, Chris Do, shares his 21+ years of knowledge on business, branding, design, and user experience. He also discusses the state of the industry and shares stories from experts in the field.

02. Invisibilia

Invisibilia is a radio program and podcast currently produced and hosted by Alix Spiegel and Hanna Rosin for National Public Radio. Previous seasons were also hosted by Lulu Miller. The show debuted in early 2015, and “explores the intangible forces that shape human behavior – things like ideas, beliefs, assumptions and emotions.” The program’s title comes from Latin, meaning “all the invisible things”. The Guardian ranked Invisibilia among “the 10 best new podcasts of 2015.”

03. Stuff You Should Know

We all have knowledge gaps and misconceptions, and this informative and entertaining podcast can help fix that. Each episode covers a topic you might want to know more about, like how barbed wire actually works, a brief history of punk rock, and how ventriloquists do what they do. This one’s guaranteed to give you some prime cocktail party conversation.

04. The Missing Crypto Queen

You might not have heard of Dr Ruja Ignatova, but two years ago she was poised to become one of the most influential figures in tech. Her OneCoin cryptocurrency was billed as ‘the Bitcoin killer’, and thousands bought into it. But it was all an illusion. OneCoin was a scam, a Ponzi scheme under the guise of a cryptocoin, and in 2017 warrants were issued for the arrest of all its leaders. But Ignatova simply vanished. This podcast retells the story and goes on the hunt for Ignatova.

05. WTF With Marc Maron

Since it started in 2009, WTF With Marc Maron has become one of the most well regarded comedy podcasts around. Maron starts each episode off with a monologue then gets into some seriously awesome interviews with movie stars, comedians, and other celebrities. If you’ve never listened to podcasts before, this is a great place to start.

06. Radio Lab : Science and more

Since 2002, Radiolab has been devoted to investigating a strange world. Created by Jad Abumrad and hosted by Jad and Robert Krulwich, Radiolab has won Peabody Awards, a National Academies Communication Award for their investigative use of radio to make science accessible to broad audiences, and in 2011 Abumrad received the MacArthur Genius grant. The show has an archive of hundreds of episodes and has toured in sold out shows nationwide.

Radiolab is available on iTunes and heard around the country on more than 500 member stations.
